Silicone Rubber - Polytek Platsil - Liquid Silicone Platinum Cured
- Polytek® manufactures a full range of two-part, room-temperature curing silicone rubbers that offer great flexibility, tear strength, chemical resistance, and release properties. Silicone molds can be used to cast a variety of materials, including polyurethane, polyester and epoxy resins, polyurethane foam, plaster, wax, concrete, low melting metals, and more.
- One of the primary advantages of using silicone mold rubbers instead of other flexible materials, like polyurethane rubber, is that release agent is not needed when casting polyurethane resins, foams and other materials into silicone molds. This is especially important when cast parts need to be painted as paint will not adhere well to parts with residual release agent.
- **We often get asked how much is in a kit, and the answer is below under each product's 'Specific Volume'-- But, to simplify, if 1lb of material has a volume of 25 cubic inches, that is just under the size of a 3" x 3" x 3" cube, which is 27 cubic inches (picture a Rubik's Cube)
- Polytek® manufactures two different types of silicone rubbers: platinum-cured (PlatSil®) silicones and tin-cured (TinSil®) silicones: There are distinct qualities that each line offers and their primary differences are:
- TinSil® silicones are condensation-cure systems that shrink slightly on cure (~1%) compared to addition-cure PlatSil® silicones, which do not shrink on cure.
- Cured TinSil® silicones have shorter library life (2 to 5 years total) compared to PlatSil® silicones.
- TinSil® silicones are slightly less expensive than PlatSil® silicones.
- Liquid PlatSil® silicones are more sensitive to certain materials (e.g., sulfur, tin compounds, Bondo) and suffer from cure inhibition (uncured surface material) more often than TinSil® silicones.
- Cured TinSil® molds can inhibit some casting materials, including PlatSil® silicones, Poly-Optic® Clear Casting Resin and many polyurethane rubbers.
- There are skin-safe platinum-cured silicones available in the PlatSil® product line: PlatSil® Gels.
PlatSil (Plastinum Care) Silicone Rubber:
- Use PlatSil® Liquid Silicone Rubbers to make your own silicone molds and silicone parts.
- PlatSil® rubbers are platinum-cured (also known as addition-cure), room temperature-curing silicones (RTV) that are used to make flexible, high-strength molds and parts. PlatSil® molds are often selected over other mold materials (e.g., polyurethane rubbers) because of their excellent release properties. They also exhibit long library life and low shrinkage on cure compared to other mold material options.
- PlatSil® molds are excellent for casting polyurethane, epoxy and polyester resin, polyurethane foam, wax, plaster, soap, concrete, and more. Release agent is generally not needed to cast any of these materials.
- These rubbers are commonly used in Sculpture & Foundry, Prototyping, Architectural Reproduction & Restoration, Foam, Plastic & Plaster Millwork & Ornamentation, Theming & Display, Candle Making, Craft & Hobby projects, and some Concrete Casting applications.
- PlatSil Features:
- Two-part platinum-cured (addition-cure) silicone rubbers
- Room temperature curing (RTV)
- Shore Hardness Options: A10-A60
- Do not exhibit shrinkage upon curing so they are useful for casting dimensionally stable parts for highly accurate prototyping and model making applications
- Molds do not require release agents when casting most materials
- Cured molds have a long library life
- Pourable or brushable (thicken with PlatThix liquid thickener or Fumed Silica)
- High-strength
- Excellent chemical resistance
- Reproduces fine details
- Can be accelerated for rapid cure
- Ideal for the most demanding resin casting applications
- NOTE ON CURE INHIBITION: Sulfur/tin/amine-contaminated materials and tools will cause cure inhibition in platinum-cured silicone rubbers, which means that the rubber that is in contact with the contaminated surface will remain gummy or uncured. Make sure to test cure the rubber on your surface before full-scale application. Use a polyurethane or tin-cured silicone rubber if you know that you’ll be working with any of these inhibitors.

PlatSil® 71-11 Silicone Rubber is a two-part, platinum-catalyzed, liquid silicone system that cures (RTV) to a blue-green, Shore A10 rubber. This is a pourable rubber, but it can be easily thickened with PlatThix Liquid Thickener or Fumed Silica for brush-on application.
PlatSil® 73-15 Silicone Rubber is a two-part, platinum-catalyzed, liquid silicone system that cures (RTV) to a white translucent, Shore A15 rubber. The transparent nature of the cured rubber makes it a good option for molds that need to be cut after cured – because the model is visible, parting lines can be better determined. It is also very useful when casting intricate parts to ensure that the entire mold cavity has been filled with casting material. This is a pourable rubber, but it can be easily thickened with PlatThix Liquid Thickener or Fumed Silica for brush-on application.
PlatSil® 73-20 Silicone Rubber is a two-part, platinum-catalyzed, liquid silicone system that cures (RTV) to a blue translucent, Shore A20 rubber. Compared to other silicones in the PlatSil® 73-Series line, this option sets quickly with a demold time of 1 hour (at room temperature). The transparency of PlatSil® 73-20 is useful for molds that need to be cut after cure – parting lines can be better determined because the model is visible. This is a pourable rubber, but it can be easily thickened with PlatThix Liquid Thickener or Fumed Silica for brush-on application.
